1930, Martinique. In the middle of a huge plantation lies Rue Cases-Nègres: two rows of wooden huts abandoned by the adults who have gone to work in the sugar cane fields. The street belongs to the children, especially eleven-year-old José, an orphan raised by his grandmother M'an Tine. She has only one dream: for José to get an education. But to do that, he must leave Rue Cases-Nègres... Director Euzhan Palcy, born in 1956, adapted Joseph Zobel's novel ‘La Rue Cases Nègres’ for the screen. Although it was only her third film, it was a huge success in France and abroad, winning 17 international awards, including the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
